Carlton Power, an independent energy infrastructure developer in Britain, has received planning permission for a significant battery project valued at EUR 750 million (USD 962.7 million) in Greater Manchester, northern England. The project aims to address the growing need for energy supply balance as the country increases its reliance on renewable power sources. To achieve its target of reaching net zero emissions by 2050, Britain requires a substantial expansion of renewable power capacity on its grid. Alongside this, there is a need for storage systems like grid-scale batteries to manage energy demand during periods when wind or solar projects are not actively generating power.

The approved battery project is designed to have a capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW). Carlton Power anticipates that once the financial investment decision is made, construction can commence as early as 2024, and the facility is expected to begin commercial operations in the last quarter of 2025.

The chosen location for this battery facility is the Trafford site, which was previously home to a coal-fired power plant. Carlton Power has also obtained approval for an additional energy project at the same site, a 200 MW green hydrogen project.

By providing essential grid-scale battery storage and green hydrogen production capabilities, the company is contributing to the country’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and meet its long-term environmental objectives.

The combination of renewable power capacity expansion and energy storage solutions like the proposed battery project will be crucial in ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply as the United Kingdom works towards a cleaner, more environmentally friendly energy landscape.
