Toyota unveiled new technology that would change the future of cars. It had earlier held a briefing session “Toyota Technical Workshop” under the theme “Let’s Change the Future of Cars” to announce a variety of new technologies that the company will incorporate in order to support its transformation into a mobility company.
Hiroki Nakajima, Executive VP and CTO explained about toyota technology strategy and the direction of future manufacturing. He also spoke on the specific and diverse technologies, including concepts under development that will help achieve the company’s vision.
Takero Kato, the appointed president of the newly established BEV Factory, and Mitsumasa Yamagata, the appointed president of the Hydrogen Factory also spoke. They elaborated on their respective strategies for the battery EV and hydrogen businesses.
Toyota Mobility Concept
At the policy briefing session, an explanation of the “Toyota Mobility Concept” was given and their approaches were discussed. The three approaches that hold the key to its realization are electrification, intelligence, and diversification.
Electrification
In the area of electrification, they will continue to pursue a “multi-pathway approach,” including the introduction of optimal powertrains for each region.
Intelligence
In the area of intelligence, in addition to vehicles and services, they will also promote initiatives to expand their connection with society, such as Woven City.
Diversification
In the area of diversification, they will continue to diversify their business by expanding their scope from “cars” to “society” to include freedom of mobility and diverse energy options for all.
Shift to Advanced Development Fields
In order to promote these three approaches, Toyota has been shifting resources to Advanced Development fields and actively investing in future-oriented areas since it was inaugurated in 2016.
As of March 2023, it has shifted more than half of its R&D staff and approximately half of its R&D expenses to Advanced Development fields while increasing the total amount. Toyota aims at further accelerating this trend in the future.
Three Axes
Toyota would like to promote car manufacturing based on three axes. The first would be to pursue safety and security without compromise. Toyota will further refine it’s Safety Sense and deliver safe and reliable technologies to their customers.
The second would be that the future be built by everyone. Toyota will create the future by connecting with its colleagues around the world through initiatives such as CJPT’s efforts to decarbonize the commercial sector, its partnership with the CP Group in Thailand, and its collaboration in motorsports, etc.
The third would be accelerating localization. As the needs of customers in each region will differ further in the future, Toyota will accelerate “development near its customers” at its research and development bases all around the world.
Conclusion
Toyota has overcome many difficult challenges with its technological capabilities and has developed numerous vehicles that are paving the way for the future. They plan on changing the future of cars. By using the power of their technological abilities for transportation into the future and connecting cars to society.
