Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) Kumbakonam division has announced that 270 special buses will be operated for devotees to reach various pilgrimage sites in the central region of the state to observe the Mahalaya Amavasya event on October 14 (Saturday).
On the auspicious day, people would visit riverbanks and seashores to offer prayers to their ancestors.
TNSTC said special buses would be operated from all major towns and cities in the central region to Thiruvaiyaru, Poompuhar, Kodiyakkarai near Vedaranyam, Samayapuram and Srirangam.
Special buses will be run for two days from October 13 (Friday).
Around 150 special buses will connect Trichy, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai with Rameswaram in Ramanathapuram district.
Special buses will be operated from Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Pattukottai to Thiruvaiyaru as people would prefer to perform rituals on the banks of the river Cauvery.
Around 45 buses will be operated by TNSTC from Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthrai, Sirkazhi, Poraiyar, Nagapattinam, Pattukottai, and Vedaranyam to Poompuhar and Kodiyakkarai seashores.
Fifty special buses would be used to connect Srirangam and Samayapuram temples from the Central bus terminus and Chathiram bus stand in Trichy city.
Based on demand, the special fleets would be diverted, officials said.
