They Prepared for Idalia’s Floods But Lost Their Home in a Fire

Heather and David Durst’s children have set up a GoFundMe to help them rebuild their lives.

“Something caused a fire to happen in our house.” “We don’t know what happened exactly. We had retreated next door. We came outside, and our neighbor realized our house was on fire. So we tried to put it out. We weren’t able to, and we called 911.” “The fire department took almost an hour to get out here because of the flooding. They couldn’t get to the roads. By the time they finally got out here, the garage was fully engulfed, and it [the fire] was – it was eating up into the attic.” “Everything that was in the garage is burnt and gone. Everything that was in the house is water damaged from the fire.” “This was our dream house. She made every single touch in that house, and we made it exactly the way that we wanted. I mean, you know, it was a beautiful home. There are things that just can’t be replaced. You really can’t. I mean, this is it. This is what’s left. We’ll just start over again and we’ll rebuild.” “Do it again.” “That’s what we do.”
