Facing issue as the Powerwall seems to not charge properly no matter how long you recharge it. This is a common problem that a lot of folks meet when using the unit.
Well, there are a couple of reasons why Tesla Powerwall not charging. Like, improper wiring in the unit, high volts entering the unit, the meter being offline, software bugs, gateway glitches, Wi-Fi issues, or opened breakers.
In this guide, I’ll share the reason why the Powerwall not charging along with some solutions in this guide that you can implement. Let’s get started!
How to Fix Tesla Powerwall Not Charging?
To begin fixing the issue, you’ll need to identify the root causes. For that, let me share the reasons why is Powerwall not charging along with its fixes:
Reason #1: Mismatched Wiring Connection
Sometimes when the wiring is wrongly connected the unit can stop working or show weird reactions. In that case, you’ll need to connect the wire correctly via a professional technician according to the owner’s manual.
How to Fix?
To start with, contact the Tesla Service Center (to do it under warranty service) or a local technician who knows how to do the wiring in the Tesla Powerwall unit.
Then, tell them to inspect and do the wiring connection. It would take no more than 20 – 30 minutes to do the whole procedure.
Reason #2: Power Surge
Your Tesla Powerwall may not charge after reset if the main power grid has some faults like sending higher volts than recommended to the unit. In this situation, you’ll need to turn off the power from the grid and talk to the power authority in your zone.
How to Fix?
Start by turning off the power from the grid as a power surge is a bad thing for the home that occurs due to hurricanes or other natural disasters.
Then, call the local power authority about the power grid issue (voltage coming from the grid is higher than 220V – 240V or more). You’ll need to turn the grid off until the technician comes and takes care of your zone grid issue.
Reason #3: Meter Offline
In case your mobile app does not show power flows or energy data, it may occur when the Powerwall meter is offline. It happens as your battery storage level is at 0% for a few days or less than 10% while not charging. To resolve it, set the grid supply CTs to the Site via an expert.
How to Fix?
You’ll need to contact the installer of the utility meter and inform them about the grid supply CTs that are set to None instead of Site. As this requires real-world knowledge of electrical work, it’s best to do it via an expert instead of doing it yourself.
Reason #4: Software Glitch
If your Tesla Powerwall is stuck in Standby mode for a long time, it indicates the update is on the way or the system does not match with existing software. This can be resolved if you simply download the new software on the mobile app or call Tesla to push the software.
How to Fix?
Then, open the Tesla App on your phone and press Software Update > Install or Yes. After that, the car will start downloading the new software in your car.
However, if it’s not showing the latest update, then call Tesla and tell them to push the software or degrade the software.
Reason #5: Gateway Is Offline
If you can’t see the energy data in your mobile app, it may occur as the Gateway is offline. In that case, the power flow screen in the app goes blank or greyed out and the Gateway will make a beeping noise. To fix it, you’ll need to reset a Tesla Powerwall Gateway or switch.
How to Fix?
- In Gateway 1: Open the door of the grey Gateway box and then insert a pencil or wood stick that matches the reset hole (on the top section). Keep on doing so for 5 – 10 seconds and then release it. Next, wait for 3 – 5 minutes.
- In Gateway 2: Open the door of the white Gateway box and use the same tool on the reset hole (on the left side). Next, hold the pencil for 10 seconds. Then, let it be like this for 3 – 5 minutes.
- In Switch: Grab a Phillips PH2 screwdriver to unscrew the 3 fasteners and take out the conduit hub. After that, insert the pencil into the hole and hold it for a certain period. Then, wait for some while before reinstalling all the removed parts.
You can use a chopstick or similar item on the hole where is Reset button on the Tesla Powerwall Backup Gateway or Switch. If reset doesn’t work, do the whole process again.
Reason #6: Wi-Fi Glitch
The Tesla Powerwall not connecting to Wi-Fi can happen due to connection issues as the Powerwall can’t get signals. It can also occur when you use a 5 GHz router or a gadget that runs both 5 and 2.4 GHz bandwidth. To resolve it, just switch to a 2.4 GHz router or reset it.
How to Fix?
You’ll need to test the signal using your phone. If it seems not okay, then replace the router with a new Wi-Fi router that signals 2.4 GHz as the Powerwall only supports this bandwidth.
And, if the router is sending stable signals to your phone, then turn off the Powerwall unit and wait for around 5 minutes before turning it on.
Reason #7: Breaker Is Open
If your Tesla Powerwall keeps going offline or the LED light on the right side not turning on, it indicates your breaker is open. In this situation, you may get an alert on the mobile app about Breaker Open. Just turn all the parts off or change the Powerwall via Tesla to resolve this.
How to Fix?
You’ll need to turn off everything including the breaker, gateway breaker, Powerwall, and so on. Then, wait for around 10 minutes or more. After that, turn all the parts in on position and check if the issue goes away or not.

Fixing your Tesla Powerwall not charging will require expert help as most of the electrical parts can cause a shock if you are new to this. So, it’s best to play safe by taking a technician’s help.
