Tesla Cabin Overheat Protection Not Working [Solved]


As a Tesla owner, it can be frustrating when you really need to use the Cabin Overheat Protection (COP) and it stops working.

Well, the Tesla Cabin Overheat Protection stops working as the Sentry Mode, Tilt/Intrusion, or Transport Mode is turned on. Apart from that, below 20% charging, hot weather outside, and software issues can cause the COP to not work.

Cause #1: Sentry Mode or Tilt Turned On

When you unintentionally or intentionally turn on the Sentry Mode or Tilt (it’s only on Model X/S), Tesla Cabin Overheat Protection greyed out and becomes unavailable. To resolve the issue, you’ll need to turn off Sentry Mode or Tilt.

How to Troubleshoot?

Based on your car series, use the car’s screen and hit Controls > Safety or Safety & Security as you’ll find both options in this section. After that, you’ll find the Sentry Mode at the top and select the OFF option.

Now, if your car is equipped with the Tilt/ Intrusion option, just scroll down and you’ll find this option right below the Security Alarm option. Then, click on the slider to turn this option off.

Cause #2: Low Battery Charge

A lot of times the COP can stop working or run weirdly when your car’s battery power is below the 20% SOC. To get rid of this, simply charge the car and then use the Cabin Overheat Protection after parking it.

How to Troubleshoot?

You can either charge your car on a nearby Supercharger or simply charge it at home. Once you make a decision, hit on the Controls > Charge Port icon (lightning bolt sign) on the car’s display to open the charge port cover.

After that, insert the charger inside the port and make sure to secure it after hearing the clicking sound.

Then, let it charge until the battery charges based on the Tesla recommended charge limit. Next, turn off the Cabin Overheat Protection and then turn it on after waiting for a while.

Cause #3: Extreme Heat on the Outside

The interior temp on the Tesla App can show above 120°F while the outside is 100°F when using the Cabin Overheat Protection No A/C mode. This occurs due to the heat waves near the cabin making the car feel like the inside is hotter. You can fix it by turning on and off the A/C!

How to Troubleshoot?

To start with, you’ll need to unlock and lock the car via the Tesla App as sometimes this can resolve the issue. If this fails, just use the car’s screen and press on the Climate Control setting (with a fan sign).

Then, click on the A/C option at the top (make it blue) and leave the car in that state until it reaches 80°F or so.

After that, turn the A/C option off. Once the car’s interior temperature rises above 105°F, the COP should start to work again.

Ensure to fix the issue of Tesla A/C like this if it doesn’t flow cool air or stop working.

Cause #4: Transport Mode Turned On

The Cabin Overheat Protection can get disabled when you turn on the Transport Mode for some reason. Sometimes the car itself can turn this option on and cause the COP to stop working. In that case, just turn off the Transport Mode and resolve the issue.

How to Troubleshoot?

To turn the Transport Mode, simply use your car’s screen and go to Controls > Service > Towing > Transport Mode.

Then, simply hit on the bar (make it grey) to deactivate this mode. If you just shift the gear to Park (P), it’ll cancel the Transport Mode. After that, be sure to do the Tesla 2-button reset trick and then run the COP to get it to work again.

Cause #5: Software Bugs

If your Cabin Overheat Protection keeps turning off or never turns on, this may indicate issues related to firmware or the system. In that case, you should reset the car and then install the software update (if available), and use the COP on another driver profile.

How to Troubleshoot?

To begin with, use the two scroll buttons of the steering wheel for around 10 seconds and then let the screen come back.

After that, check for any remaining updates on the Software or Update Available section (Controls > Software). Now, hit on the Software Update with the clock icon and let it download fully.

Then, open the mobile app and hit on Software Update > Install/Yes to update the latest software. In the car’s screen, go to Controls and hit on the Driver Profile icon (at the top section) > Driver Profile Setting.

Afterward, you’ll find the prompt of Driver Profile Settings and then select another driver profile. If you don’t have another driver profile, simply hit Add New Driver and name it before using this driver profile. Then, turn on the COP when using another driver profile.
