Samsung SDI LMFP Based Battery Solutions

Samsung SDI, the Korean rechargeable batteries manufacturer, for the first time, unveiled its lithium-iron-manganese-phosphate (LMFP) battery at IAA Mobility 2023 organized between 5-10 September in Munich, Germany. The LMFP battery is considered next-generation battery technology and is the upgraded version of the lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery. It uses lithium, iron, manganese, and phosphate as the cathode material and a graphite carbon electrode with a metallic backing as the anode.

The addition of manganese to LFP batteries provides 15-20% higher energy density to LMFP as compared to LFP at the same cost of production. Earlier, Samsung SDI was focused on the development of high-nickel premium nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) EV batteries which are costlier than LFP. In the LFP-based Li-ion battery market, about 90% of world demand is dominated by Chinese battery manufacturing companies like CATL, and BYD. LFP has lesser energy density than NCA but has higher cycle life and safety. Now addition of manganese to LFP can provide battery energy density as well as power density.
