National Business Daily report - the first Xiaomi EV will be mass produced as of February 2024

National Business Daily has managed to obtain some information about the current state of affairs and production schedule of Xiaomi’s first EV. According to the news outlet, on November 8th, Xiaomi held a closed-door meeting with partners that’s been highly confidential with no options for official news reports. A few days later, NBD interviewed a person working near Xiaomi’s production base in the Beijing Economic Development Zone. The person said that production should have already begun with plenty of people and equipment flowing in. An NBD reporter visited the site to verify this information. An unnamed parts supplier revealed that the four main shops of the factory have already completed the first phase of building – stamping, welding, painting, and final assembly. Another unnamed person, “familiar with the matter,” said in an interview that Xiaomi’s first EV will enter production in December and large-scale production will set off in February 2024. This coincides with Lei Jun’s earlier words that mass production is planned for the first half of 2024.

The official information is that the Xiaomi factory will be built in two phases. The firs phase is completing the factory in 2023 and launching production with an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles. The second phase will begin in 2024 and end in 2025. Obviously, the first phase is complete and has received its clearance on June 12, according to insiders. Moreover, there has been a small batch of trial production with dozens of vehicles being currently produced. A few days ago, Chinese media disseminated leaked photos of the bodywork of the first Xiaomi EV, which resembles the XPeng P7. Famous Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo supposes that Xiaomi will ship around 50K-60K of its first EV.

At the same time, the matter of authorizing production is still on the table. Some specialists think that it is not possible for Xiaomi to obtain official clearance for production in such short time periods. This is slightly backed up by the rumors stating Xiaomi has contacted several established auto manufacturers and that the company has even reached agreements with BAIC and Haima for cooperation. Moreover, even with its own production facilities, Xiaomi will have difficulty ramping up production to 100,000 units per year in 2024, other industry analysts say. Hence, cooperation with other auto makers will play a crucial role in solving the existing production shortcomings.
