A team of students from the Academic Motorsports Club Zürich, Swiss universities ETH Zürich, and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, has broken the world record for the fastest acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph in an electric vehicle (EV).
Their car, which they built from scratch, bested the previous record set by a team of students in Germany by more than a third. Known as the Greenteam, the previous record holders, a team of 20 students from Germany, achieved the feat in 1.461 seconds.
Christened as ‘mythen’, the EV gets four hub-mounted electric motors that generate 326hp. For that sort of power, the car interestingly weighs just 140 kgs. Kate Magetti, a student drove the car and achieved 100 kmph from a standstill in just 0.956 seconds. The record-breaking drive was attempted at an airbase strip in Dubendorf, Switzerland. Interestingly, the car just required 12.3 metres to achieve this feat. To put that into perspective, it is just over a half of a cricket pitch.
On the other hand, the fastest electric production car title is currently held by Rimac Revera that achieved 0-100 kmph in 1.81 seconds and gets a top speed of 412 kmph.
The world record for the fastest acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph is constantly being broken, as engineers and designers find new ways to improve the performance of EVs.
The record-breaking acceleration achieved by these students is a major step forward for the EV industry. It shows that EVs are capable of achieving incredible performance, and it will likely inspire other teams to develop even faster and more efficient electric vehicles.
